Shower Storage

Everyone wants and needs more shower storage!  Almost every client I visit asks me how they can get more storage in their showers.  I bet if you look in your shower right now, you will count no less than close to a dozen personal items.  Shampoo, conditioner, razors, soap, body oils, creams, lotions, loofah, etc.  In other words, everyone needs more shower storage that is uniquely tailored for their lifestyle.

Why is shower storage so important?

Shower StorageShower StorageWhen we talk about a shower and shower storage, we are almost always referring to the master bathroom.  The guest or hall bathroom typically has a tub/shower combination and is for children and guests.  The master bathroom, however; is where you find just a shower.  If there is a tub in the master bathroom, it’s usually separate from the shower except in smaller homes.  In smaller homes and attached housing, the master bathroom can have the same tub/shower combination.

Shower storage is important because the master bathroom is typically shared by two adults.  Each has their own unique bathing needs.

How can I get more shower storage?

There are two ways to get more shower storage.  Firstly, you can buy something from a retailer or the internet.  These typically consists of various types of racks and baskets.  They attach to the shower walls using screws, suction cups, and poles.  There are also shower caddy’s that hang from the shower head.  All of these are “after the fact” products.  In other words, the shower is already finished.  These “after the fact” products are typically made from cheap plastic and low-quality metal.  They break, stain, rust, and take up space in the shower.  They hold little weight and are not designed for how you use your shower.

The second and best way to get more shower space is when you remodel your shower.  The only way you can be sure to get the space you need for the way you shower is to hire a Design/Build Contractor who provides you with professionally developed 3D plans and specifications.  When it comes to the shower, every homeowner’s storage needs are different.  Professionally developed plans will show you where everything is and the height.  Below are a few examples.

Some prefer a large recess in the wall while others like several recessed niches (aka cubbies and shampoo recesses).  Others like corner shelfs.  Notice the soap dish in some of these.  A soap dish adds storage!  Notice the showers with bathtubs.  The tubs have protruding corners that provide additional storage.  Can you see anything else?  There are towel bars on the glass enclosures.  This provides space for towels and bathmats.  What you can’t see in one of these pictures are the robe hooks on the wall for robes and nightgowns.  The seat in two of the above showers adds convenient storage, a comfortable place to bathe, and a well-situated place for shaving.
