Furniture Style Bathroom Cabinets

Furniture style bathroom cabinets bring warmth, beauty, and tranquility to any bathroom remodel.  These bathroom cabinets have become very popular over the years as people want their bathrooms to integrate into their home.  They want their bathrooms to look and feel less sterile and “cookie-cutter”.

A bathroom cabinet stands apart from other pieces of furniture in your home.  It’s the most noticeable bathroom piece and the most used by homeowners and guests.  What better way to add personality to a bathroom than using furniture style bathroom cabinets.

Furniture style bathroom cabinets cannot be moved around after installation.  Although they are also referred to as “free standing cabinets”, these cabinets are not truly freestanding.  These cabinets are attached to the wall for safety and stability and are hooked up to the plumbing.

Furniture Style Bathroom Cabinets add Charm

For the last 125 years, every home was built using the same basic cabinet style.  A square box with one or two sets of doors along with three drawers.  Over the last 25 years, some builders added doors and drawers with a basic cookie-cutter design.  The box, however, remained about the same.

Furniture-grade cabinets and the wood used to build them is considered the very best of cabinet options. The wood planks have tighter and more appealing wood grains or hardly any grain at all.  These bathroom cabinets are more durable because the wood in these cabinets comes from furniture-grade wood that lasts for generations.  Furniture style bathroom cabinets are also the most expensive.

But are they more expensive?  Furniture style bathroom cabinets use wood that lasts a lifetime and requires far fewer repairs, refinishing, and replacement during that time.  The higher first-time costs pay off in terms of lower lifetime costs.

How are Furniture Style Bathroom Cabinets Made?

Furniture style bathroom cabinets are made using solid natural wood to ensure strength and longevity.  Woods like select maple, oak, birch, walnut and cherry will last you decades.

How is wood strength measured?

The Janka Hardness Scale is used to determine woods strength and durability.  This is a measurement designed to quantify the hardness of a particular wood species by seeing how much force is required to submerge a small steel ball halfway into a piece of wood.

For cabinets, this helps establish how each wood will hold up against impact damage and general wear.  For example, maple scores extremely well on the Janka scale with a rating of 1450. That means it takes 1450 pounds of force (lbf) for the steel ball to embed halfway into the sample of maple wood.  Other popular hardwoods that perform particularly well are white oak (1360) and birch (1260).

Furniture style bathroom cabinets are made to look like a piece of furniture.  They do not have a toe-kick.  They are open on the bottom – the same as all furniture.  Furniture style bathroom cabinets can be made using very ornate or basic characteristics and features.

Many of the home improvement stores and internet resellers promote low-cost furniture style cabinets that are not truly furniture style.  Using particle board and medium density fiber board (MDF), these ratailers create an illusion of furniture.  They may look like furniture style bathroom cabinets, but they are not.

Furniture Style Bathroom CabinetThe most distinguishing feature of these cabinets is they have toe kicks.  Consider these a furniture hybrid.  They contain furniture style characteristics but maintain the economic look and materials of a typical box cabinet.

This hybrid cabinet can easily fool you.  This is not a durable, high-quality furniture product.  It will not look or perform like a solid wood furniture style bathroom cabinet.

Does a Furniture Style Bathroom Cabinet Work in a Small Bathroom?

Yes!  A furniture-style vanity is an excellent choice for a smaller bathroom as the legs and space underneath give the room the appearance of being larger and having a more “open” look.

Are There Disadvantages?

Furniture style vanities do have slightly less room than built in cabinets.  This is especially true if it is completely or partially open at the bottom.
