Home Office

The work environment has forever changed in the last year.  Millions of people (42% of the U.S. labor force) are now working from home.  Millions of businesses will never return to the traditional office environment.  A cramped, jumbled background with bad lighting, distracting noises, and improvised everything begs “I need a home office!”

This cry for help is uttered tens of thousands of times daily.  This is especially true for parents who need quiet and organized space to focus on work.  Many parents also need space for home schooling kids. Additions and home add-ons are expensive.  What to do?  A home office is the answer!

What is a Home Office?

Home OfficeA home office is turning all or part of existing space in your home into organized, convenient work space.  There are no outside walls or roofs to build.  There are no floors to pour or assemble.  It is substantially cheaper than adding on space.

Creating a dedicated working area via a reconfiguration of existing space could certainly pay dividends when it comes to selling up, quite apart from saving your own sanity in this extended period of family ‘togetherness’! In fact, research has shown that the addition of a home office can add around 8% to 10% to the value of your property in the current market. Not a bad return on your investment!

What do I need to know about a Home office?

Home OfficeThe first thing is how much space do you need?  DAD’s Construction is an expert on home offices.  We can build just about any desk, wall, and organizer configuration to quickly get you situated and enjoy regained sanity!  As a design/build contractor, we can help you with these decisions.  Regardless of the size or shape of the room, we can help.  Using our expert drafting service, you will see exactly what your new home office space will look like before any work begins.  Our proprietary 3-deminsional full color drawing approach leaves nothing to chance.

Part of deciding the amount of space needed, is how you will be using the space.  When you worked in a traditional office setting, a lot went on behind the scenes to create that work environment.  Having an efficient and productive home office requires the same level of performance.  Here are 10 of the most important things you need to know:

  • Wi-Fi – the strength and reach of the Wi-Fi.

  • Air conditioning and heating.

  • Home OfficeElectrical and Lighting – this includes the type and placement of outlets and lighting fixtures (this is more important than you may realize).

  • Office equipment, furniture, and seating – How and where will it be positioned?

  • Natural light.

  • Telephones – land line and or cell phone? What about USB charging ports?

  • Cable

  • Storage

  • Sound transmission – both coming into and out of your new office space.

  • Flooring

Anything else I need to know about a Home Office?

You may need a building permit to perform your home office.  If required, DAD’s takes care of this for you.  If you add a window, skylight, or change the location of or add an exterior door, you will likely need HOA approval.  DAD’s provides you with the drawings for your application along with any required material information.
