Porcelain Countertops

Durable and water-resistant, porcelain countertops are a practical countertop option in a busy bathroom.  Porcelain countertops have low porosity and are incredible durability.  Although less common than quartz and granite when remodeling the bathroom, porcelain is a perfect fit for the bathroom.  It comes in lots of styles and colors.  Porcelain has the beauty of a natural stone slab with the strength of porcelain.

When it comes to selecting a material for a new countertop, porcelain is not always a top choice. But its popularity is growing!

Porcelain countertops have two looks.  These are marble and monochromatic (black and white).

Why Should I Choose Porcelain Countertops for My Bathroom Remodel?

Porcelain CountertopsIf you are looking for a monochrome bathroom, porcelain countertops make a dramatic statement that is modern, glamorous, and edgy.  Porcelain can also create a serene and soothing space.

Porcelain CountertopsMonochrome is an incredibly versatile style that works perfectly in all bathrooms.  Sticking to black and white creates a room that is super chic, and it allows you to add small pops of color without overwhelming the room.

If your heart is set on a marble look when remodeling your bathroom, porcelain is better than marble.  Why?  Durability.  Although both are strong materials that work in many settings, porcelain wins the durability category.  It is ideal for high traffic, use, and moisture environments.

Porcelain slabs and tile are also the perfect material for steam showers, showers, tub/shower surrounds, and jacuzzi bath remodels.

Porcelain is not a good countertop material for furniture style bathroom cabinets.

What Is Porcelain?

Porcelain is a ceramic material that consists of a clay mineral such as kaolin. Other materials are used to a lesser extent, with all being combined in a kiln at an extremely high temperature to form the finished product. Because of its composition, porcelain is typically longer lasting than other ceramics and far less prone to water damage.

How Do I Select Porcelain Countertops?

Porcelain countertops come in three varieties.  These are Elemental, Industrial, and Metallic.

Elemental Porcelain Countertops

If you are looking for drama with striking vein patterns, or to infuse tranquility with subtle marbling designs, Elemental porcelain is for you.  As the name implies, this is a more natural, stone look.  Elemental offers breathtaking views, stunning visuals and seamless design.

Industrial Porcelain Countertops

Add an urban chic feel with industrial porcelain.  Industrial closely mimics the essence of poured concrete, while the smooth matte finish adds a touch of sophistication.

Metallic Porcelain Countertops

The reflective, metallic sheen of Metallic takes fashion to new heights.  Metallic has the look of aged, unrefined concrete enhanced with mixed metals to create a glimmering presentation.

What are the Pros of Porcelain Countertops?

Porcelain Countertops in the bathroomPorcelain is less prone to water damage than many other materials. This is extremely practical for a bathroom countertop, where you will no doubt be using water and other liquids frequently.

Porcelain is heat resistant. Since most porcelain is made by heating its materials to more than 2000 degrees Fahrenheit, there is hardly a temperature it cannot withstand.  Considering the heat generated from curling irons, blow dryers, candles, and essential oils, this is a great advantage.

Another benefit of porcelain countertops is their stain resistance. Porcelain is mostly non-porous, meaning whatever substances end up on the counter will generally not be absorbed or leave a permanent stain.  Considering the cosmetics, aerosols, dyes, and personal hygiene products used in the bathroom, this is perhaps, the greatest benefit of porcelain in the bathroom.

What are the Cons of Porcelain Countertops?

There are some negatives to consider when thinking about a porcelain countertop. For one, it is generally more expensive than other types of ceramic.  Both its price and installation.  It is a very dense material, meaning it is heavy to lift and maneuver, which sometimes creates a difficult installation process.  This density of porcelain; however, is also one of its many benefits.

Porcelain Countertops in Master Bathroom RemodelPorcelain countertops are prone to scratches.  Porcelain’s tough structure makes it scratch resistant. You can slice, cut, and move things around on a porcelain countertop without worrying about damaging the surface.  Pumice based cosmetics and hygiene products can create small scratches on the surface.  Generally, these are hard to see.

Porcelain countertops will crack under blunt force.  The chance of this happening in a bathroom is extremely low.  In a kitchen, the chance is extremely high (dropping a pan, bottle, jar, or can on the countertop).

No material you choose for a counter is perfect, and almost everything is prone to scratching and cracking.  Porcelain; however, highly resists wear, scratching, chipping, and cracking, making it ideal for your bathroom countertop.
