Placement of Bathtub Fixtures
The proper placement of bathtub fixtures is an important part of your bathroom remodel. Installing the bathtub fixtures incorrectly can make your bathing experience difficult and dangerous. The tub controls should be easy to access — both while sitting inside and standing outside of the tub.
The valve is typically installed 30″ above the floor. The spout is installed about 20″ above the floor. The shower head should be installed a minimum of 78” above the floor. All measurements are centered both horizontally and vertically on the wall to the tub drain. These measurements are for a typical 14” deep bathtub with a shower (also known as a tub/shower).
When Considering the Placement of Bathtub Fixtures, Can the Measurements Differ?
Yes. When considering bathroom remodeling or replacing your Bathtub the placement of bathtub fixtures, manufacturer guidelines, tub rim height, and local building code ordinances can alter the measurements noted above. Most standard bathtubs are about 14” deep. Residential bathtubs range from 14” to over 20” deep. Soaking, air, and jet bathtubs can be 18” to more than 24” deep.
Is There a Standard or Typical Height for fixtures when Installing Bathtub Fixtures?
Since the depth of bathtubs can vary, using a defined height can get you into trouble. Therefore, when installing a bathtub, you want the tub spout about 5” above the rim. The valve should be about 14” above the rim. These measurements are to the center of the tub spout and valve. The space between the top of the tub spout trim and the bottom of the valve trim should be 4” – 6”. The shower head should always be about 78” above the floor. Why use the word “about”? When a bathtub is properly installed, it is set into a mortar bed. This mortar bed can slightly alter these figures by 1/2” to over 1”. A good practice when installing a bathtub is to add 1” to the above figures.
